Family Procyonidae

Procyonids do not have an extensive distribution in the north. In Canada, only one member of this family can be found (raccoons). This family exhibits long tails, which some species use for gripping while climbing in arboreal environments. The family contains species that are generally small to medium-sized. Body types among species vary from slender to stocky.

The Procyonidae family
  • are opportunistic omnivores exhibiting bunodont dentition suitable for a wide diversity of food types.
  • generally have short, broad rostrums.
  • generally have erect ears. Well developed auditory senses are important to the nocturnal habits of some members of this family.
